I hear unfamiliar laughter behind me and freeze. ![]() Me: “Get in the net… in the net… in the net… in the- I AM YOUR GOD, FISH!” I’m muttering to myself as I chase the fish with the little net scoop. At this point, I think it’s only my coworker and me in the store. One evening, I’m moving the fish into their new cups, and one is being just PARTICULARLY difficult. As anyone who’s had fish or worked in a pet store can tell you, catching a slippery little fish in a three-inch-by-three-inch cube is surprisingly challenging. Once a week or so, we’d switch all the bettas from their old, dirty cups into clean new ones. I used to work in a pretty nice pet store that, like many others, sold betta fish. If one bank says no, the other will always say yes.” Me: “So, sorted the problem with the bank?”Ĭustomer: “Yeah. I respond diplomatically, as I finish with the current customer. He hangs up and starts talking over the customer I am currently serving like they’re not even there.Ĭustomer: “It should work now. He stands to the side but isn’t letting other customers through, so they have to awkwardly squeeze past while he shouts on the phone.Ĭustomer: “Yeah, my card is being weird.”Ĭustomer: “The new iPhone! I told you I needed it!”Ĭustomer: “What?! Unlock it now! I need it! I need it!”Ĭustomer: “Dad will get me the phone if you won’t.” Me: “Maybe you can call your bank and see if there’s an issue?” They look like they’re in their early to mid-twenties.Ĭustomer: “This is so stupid! I know there is money on there!” Glad to see the point about being responsible, dependable, and independent and respecting other people having other priorities besides managing him like a child was understood…Ī customer is trying to buy the latest iPhone on a credit card, but it keeps declining. Could you please text me or get me when I have to join a meeting which I seem to have forgotten?” I do apologize for missing the team meeting, but you know, when I’m so deeply focused on my work, I kind of forget everything around me. Why did you miss it? Me: “You missed a recent team meeting via video call. ![]() Once all of this has been understood - as he assures me - and there’s some discussion between the two of us, I move on to the next topic on my list for the feedback I give him weekly on his performance.
